One Plutonian Year is a live musical performance based on the orbits of the planets and moons. Nine musicians, each representing a distinct celestial body, begin one by one playing a musical theme every time their orbit comes around. Each instrument is connected to a sound sensitive light representing their respective planet. The moons are automated and enter after the musicians. The 30 minute piece starts with Pluto’s theme, which doesn’t come in again until Pluto completes its orbit around the sun, thereby signifying the end of the performance. OPY was premiered by students of MyCincinnati as a part of the Price Hill Creative Community Festival and was performed again for the purpose of documentation with a small studio audience. This piece is intended to be performed in schools, art or music festivals, summer camps or special events and goes hand in hand with astronomical education.
